Originally from Halifax, NS, Hugh is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. With a family history of artisans, woodcarvers, and ship builders, Hugh began creating art at a young age.
“Painting is the experience of seeing translated to the canvas by way of the heart.”
Hugh is mainly influenced by North American post-impressionism. However, the single most influential artist for him is Rockwell Kent. Kent's dark, carved out landscapes, loosely and expertly illustrated, continue to resonate with Hugh years after seeing an exhibition of his work in the mid-80's,
Hugh's work has earned the People's Choice Award at the Sooke Fine Arts Show twice and the Designer's Choice Award at the Sidney Fine Arts Show. His paintings are collected both nationally and internationally.
